Clean water has made a big difference to children's health

The small community of Small Bong Mines in Liberia was hit hard by the 14 year-old Liberian civil war. The children were forced to flee into the bush with their mothers, where many became sick, and many died. Yet some little girls, like this one, have managed to not only survive but start a new life with the end of the war.

Upon their return to Small Bong Mines, this girl’s family had no home, no access to safe drinking water, and no source of food. Eating forest yams, and cassava, they slowly began to rebuild their lives. When Samaritan's Purse-Liberia BioSand Filter (BSF) team was introduced to this village in  August 2006, things began to look up.

It means that this little girl now has clean water to drink everyday, clean water to bath in, and clean water for her mum to cook with. The delighted parents of Small Bong Mines have all reported a significant difference in many of their children’s health.

Many of the children are now healthy enough to make the one hour walk (one way) to the nearest school, and their parents can save time and money on health fees.

“We are blessed to work with this village,” says Bev Kauffeldt of SP Liberia, “and the people of Small Bong Mines are very grateful to Samaritan's Purse for helping them in their new start.”
